So Abby got out of it this time. Luckily for her, she's only had her powers a few days, and her friends have seen her clearly NOT having powers for years before that. It also helps that her story is hard to believe even when stated truthfully, as she does in panel 3 (she did, in fact, magically gain super-powers that day on Main Street).

I don't think she is in the clear yet.
She fast-talked them, but in those situations most people think it over afterwards and find the flaws in the logic.

And there are definitely flaws here (using the past as proof of the present; not exactly a circular argument, but close to it); what she said in panel 3 is likely to came back to bite her ;-)

I’m going to go out on a limb here - they’re going to try to trip her up or something.

Using the past is not ironclad proof, of course. But she is helped as I say by the fact that the idea someone who was perfectly normal 2 weeks ago suddenly got super-powers is pretty far-fetched, even in a world that has them.

Of course the obvious test would be to hit her with something and it doesn't hurt her. But that'd be awfully risky. If you're wrong, Abby could be badly hurt.

The giveaway is what she says in the 3rd panel; because, when they will think about it, this was just before LL appeared for the first time.
So, yes, someone HAD TO become LL at that point, and their arguments fit.

And there are plenty of ways to trip her, for instance calling her every time LL appears, and/or tracking the precise location of her phone at those times (GPS location can pinpoint a phone give or take 2 meters, if I remember correctly).
They already know how to do that, all they have to do, is to track her phone at any time LL is flying.

It's not necessarily the case that just because LL first appeared and did super-feats the day of the armored car robbery, she would have had to have gotten her powers that day, or in that moment. She could have been born with those powers and just not acted before that. She could have gotten the powers weeks or months earlier.

Yeah . . . . When you put it like that . . . .

Well done indeed!

They didn't tip her off about the phone issue. If they're smart, they'll give that a try.

"Hey, Abby, doing anything at the moment? No? Hey, do me a favor and touch your nose. Just humor me, OK? Thanks."

Keep reading... Abby is not unaware of the phone issue.

I see 2 ways you could be thinking about, on the face of it, but neither would work:
- Having her brother keep her phone and answer for her; not suspicious, you think ?
- The notion of 're-routing' her phone number: not possible with cell phone technology; it would require much bigger phones, like the old portable phones technology used to be, due to much higher power requirements (cellular phones, the full name for cellphones, have a short communication range and work as a grid to extend their effective range).
The routing of the signal for a given cell phone requires the precise geo-location of that phone.
The old portable phones technology (before cell-phones technology) had a much longer range for each phone, and it is from that period that the notion (seen in some old movies) of using relays to hide a phone location came from.
The 2 technologies do not mix, which is why you do not see the old portable phones any more (besides the fact that the old technology cannot be made as small as current cellphones or smartphones, due to entirely different power requirements).
Satellite phones still exist (mostly used at sea or by the militaries), but require line of sight communication with a matching satellite, and still have similar power requirements, and bulk, as the old portable phones.

I have edited the previous page -- Deena now does mention the cell phone. I realized that the next scene assumes Abby knows about it, and although I had been picturing the conversation continuing and the kids eventually talking about it, I think it is best given the people who have questioned it, if I make that explicit. One panel has been altered on page 14 (the page before this).

In the next page it will be immediately obvious why this should have been mentioned.

Some kind of "gotcha" like that would seem to be important for them to mention, so that makes sense. Thanks for the mention that it changed so we could go back and read it again.

So this is the amazing and wonderful thing about telling stories in this form of media:

You can correct continuity problems BEFORE they become canon. I knew this would eventually come up, but didn't know how I'd react to it. In this case, I think it's wonderful that the technology allows you to do this.

On the other hand, if the makers of the Star Trek TV shows could do that, we'd all be convinced now that Star Trek is fact that simply hasn't happened yet. Well, some folks are already convinced, but that's another story entirely. ;)

This scene was originally much longer and I cut it for length, because it was dragging. The phone was mentioned at one point but the line got cut. It wasn't where it ended up (there was another whole page or two), but the later scene was written assuming the discussion happened.

And yeah it is better to fix it now when you guys notice it than if I couldn't fix it until after it was in print or something.

Just thought of this. How is Abbey going to be able to give a blood sample or get a vaccination update at her next doctor checkup?

I'm taking notes just in case the Spirit of 1776 ever crosses paths with me. ;)

That is an interesting question... I had not planned on it coming up but maybe I should think about writing a scene in the next arc about it...
