Extra update time...

It's been a while since we have seen Deena and Jackson because so much of issue 2 focuses on Abby and her powers. Dee and Jay don't appear again until issue 3, and so I did not work on converting them to Iray while I was working on issue 2.

Today, I started getting ready for the scene in issue 3 where they appear, so it was time to convert. Since I had to do test renders of them to make sure the skin conversion worked OK, I figured I'd do a nicer render and share it with all of you.

So here are Deena and Jackson, fully converted to Iray shaders. Both characters were converted using V3D's amazing G2 Iray skin converters. Hair was done with UHT Hair Shaders for Iray. Jackson's wearing the Trendy College outfit, auto-converted to Iray, and Deena is wearing the Pelpum dress, also auto-converted. Lighting was done with the3dWizard's iRender lights, using Rembrandt Soft HDRI lighting and ISO 150, and the background is the Multiplane Cyclorama, auto-converted to Iray.

I think these two look great, and in fact once I converted them I had way less trouble lighting them (default lighting = fine) than I did in the indoor school scene in issue 1 using 3DeLight.

Enjoy!

What I like about it is... the lighting is much easier. This is done with HDRI only. If you look at the HDRI file, it's basically just 3 white dots of different sizes on a black field. The first render came out with Deena's dress a little over exposed, so I just dropped the ISO from 200 to 150, and it was done.

I just did a render of Dr. Synapse for an upcoming 'ad' page (I still have 1 more render to do so I will post it next week) in 3DeLight. The render time is much faster... 30 seconds vs. this one took about 15 minutes. However, I spent nearly 90 minutes trying and re-trying to get the lighting right. This shot... I just loaded the light file, changed the ISO after a quick test render, and I was done.

I do so much less at-keys mucking around in Iray that I just would never go back. In fact the ONLY reason I did Doc in 3DeLight was because the damn suit that he wears does not convert well at all to Iray (as you saw in the early pages of issue 2).

I'm not saying you or anyone else should use it, but I love it. And now that we have the skin converters, and look how good these came out... I am in render heaven with the engine.

You're waiting? I've been dying to do some promo pictures and pinups of Abby in costume. I've had the costume done for a year plus. Yeah I've rendered probably 100 panels with her in the costume now, but I haven't been able to share any of them. :)

It's not too much longer now. The costume appears in full near the end of this issue.

The good news is she's wearing it for almost all of issue 3 so once you see it, you'll get a lot of it. ;)
