The best villains are subtle, smooth and convincing. And then they smile as they twist the knife in your back.

Ah, but the worst villains hand you the knife while smoothly and plausibly explaining how cutting on yourself is going to provide you with temporary relief from the things that are bothering you ...

... at least until they can get around to explaining to you how cutting on others will solve all your problems.
